Baillie Street Merchants is a speakeasy inspired bar in Old Colombo Fort. Serving up craft cocktails and quality food in an historic location used by traders and merchants throughout Sri Lanka’s rich trading past, the brief was to create an identity to fit a premium craft cocktail bar and restaurant that could contend with the growing number of South Asian craft cocktail bars. As the bar hides behind doors masquerading as a tea & coffee shop, we were also tasked with creating the packaging for tea and coffee under the same brand name. For our design research, we looked relentlessly for 1920's railway and restaurant menus courtesy of the L.A. and New York public online archives to find as many authentic examples of periodic design as we possibly could. The result (we hope) is a homage to design of the speakeasy era, with a modern twist.
