Kava Island Bar

Kava is a ceremonial drink originating in the Pacific Islands. Made from kava root plants, it is traditionally used to bring two groups of people together, additionally creating a narcotic effect that has been said to connect the drinker to the spirit world. The concept and resulting name was the main source of inspiration for Kava, the qualities of which we wanted to recreate for a bar & restaurant overhaul in one of Colombo's favourite late night spots, well known for meeting friends and 'raising spirits' into the night . Inspired by black magic, island 'juju' and the tiki bar movement of the past with a darker twist, all illustrations and resulting imagery drew upon Pacific Island folklore stories and was utilised throughout the whole concept, from menu design, staff uniforms and wallpaper prints.
