Juniper Level Pollinator Plant Festival & Fall Open Garden – Sept 15-24
Juniper Level Botanic Garden – Raleigh, North Carolina
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a gift to NC State University, will host their first Pollinator Plant Festival during the Fall Open Garden weekends, Sept. 15-24. Thousands of late summer and early fall pollinator plants, representing dozens of types, will strike a pose for visitors on the garden’s pathways and in the greenhouses. Admission is free.

“Pollinator plants and pollinators have a mutualistic relationship for survival,” said Tony Avent, the founder and proprietor of Juniper Level Botanic Garden. “During the fall, pollinators build energy-rich and protein-packed pollen reserves to survive winter hibernation or migration. Meanwhile, the plants rely upon the pollinators for survival by transferring pollen from flower to flower for fertilization and seed production.”

Common pollinators in the southeast include various species of bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, hummingbirds, beetles, birds, and flower flies. Other small mammals and lizards can act as pollinators, as well.
Juniper Level Botanic Garden – Raleigh, North Carolina
Optional walks, talks, and displays by the experts will be available at no cost during the Pollinator Plant Festival. “Bill Reynolds, Staff Entomologist and Biologist, will be on-site,” added Avent. “We invite adults and children to come and learn more from Bill about the indispensable pollinators. He is down to earth, entertaining, informative, loves nature, and enjoys talking with children and adults.”

2023 Pollinator Plant Festival / Fall Open Garden dates and times:

Fri. 9/15: 8 AM – 5 PM
Sat. 9/16: 8 AM – 5 PM
Sun. 9/17: 9 AM – 5 PM (New extended hours)

Fri. 9/22: 8 AM – 5 PM
Sat. 9/23: 8 AM – 5 PM
Sun. 9/24: 9 AM – 5 PM (New extended hours)

Juniper Level’s Pollinator Plant Festival & Fall Open Garden will be the last public visitation weekends until late February 2024.

“Extinction threatens about forty percent of global plant diversity,” said Avent, an organizer and participant in many foreign and domestic plant expeditions. “Juniper Level’s mission is to collect, preserve, and share plants worldwide. Our collection exceeds 27,000 types of plants and is among the top five collections in the United States. We have shipped over 3 million plants to all US states and 41 nations.”

Established in Wake County in 1986, Juniper Level Botanic Garden is a 28-acre educational, research, and display garden open to the public two weekends each season. “When the Garden’s endowment at North Carolina State University is fully funded, Juniper Level will open full-time as a public garden,” Avent said.

Juniper Level Botanic Garden presents Agave Festival and Summer Open Garden July 14-23
Juniper Level Botanic Garden – Raleigh, North Carolina
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Juniper Level Botanic Garden will host their first North Carolina Agave Festival during Summer Open Garden, July 14-23. Hundreds of agave plants, representing over 80 types, will be showcased throughout the garden and nurseries.

“Agave is known as the ‘plant of life’ due to heat resistance, soil adaptability, low water requirements, erosion control, and as a source of sustenance,” said Tony Avent, founder and proprietor of the garden. “Agave plants range in width from several inches to over eight feet across, with the tallest plants flowering upward over 20 feet. Agave typically live 8 to 40 years, and most will bloom and seed only once before dying.”

Established in Wake County in 1986 and recently gifted to NC State University by Tony and Anita Avent, Juniper Level Botanic Garden is a not-for-profit 28-acre educational, research, and display garden open just two weekends each season for self-guided tours, plant purchases, and free gardening walks and talks with experts.

“Combined with the eye-catching variety of colors and the symmetrical rosettes of the agaves, summer is an amazing time of year to see plants blooming in the garden,” added Avent. “There’s color everywhere and incredible pollinator activity. That’s when all the insects and birds are gathering nectar they need to survive. If you want a lot of pollinator activity in your garden in the summertime, you need plants that have a burst of flowers – Crinum lily, white top sedge, ginger lily, variegated and hardy hibiscus, spider lily, heliopsis, hidden cone ginger, also a source of turmeric, Jack-in-the-pulpit, obedient plant, love lily, flowering spurge, pineapple lily, and many more.”
Juniper Level Botanic Garden – Raleigh, North Carolina
“Our mission is to collect, preserve, and share plants worldwide,” said Avent, an organizer and participant in foreign and domestic plant expeditions. “The Juniper Level Botanic Garden collection now exceeds 27,000 types of plants and is one of the top five collections in the United States.”

Juniper Level has shipped more than 3 million plants to all US states and 41 nations – including a recent shipment to war-torn Ukraine.

“We will open full-time as a public garden when our endowment at North Carolina State University is fully funded,” added Avent.

Scheduled on both weekends is the garden hat decorating competition. All entries will be photographed upon arrival and posted on Juniper Level social media for voters. The top three vote-getters will receive garden gift certificates. “I’m thinking this could evolve into something like the Kentucky Derby fashion event for plants,” added Avent with a smile.

“There are so many incredible plants in the garden in the winter, for form, for texture, and in bloom. Wonderful plants from broadleaf evergreens to conifers to evergreen perennials. A garden does not have to be a flat pallet of mulch in the wintertime. This is what your landscape can look like.’

With a collection exceeding 27,000 types of plants, the mission of Juniper Level Botanic Garden is to collect, preserve, and share plants with the world. To date, the Garden has shipped more than 3 million plants to all 50 states and 41 nations.

Adjacent to Juniper Level Botanic Garden in southern Wake County, Panther Branch Rosenwald School will open for public tours during the Winter Open Garden weekends. The Colonial style school, constructed in 1926, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Wake County Historic Landmark.

Panther Branch Rosenwald School was restored by Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Jeffrey B. Robinson. The school was one of over 5,000 built in the southern United States to improve education opportunities for African American children.

The Rosenwald Project was a massive initiative by Julius Rosenwald, Chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and Booker T. Washington, the first leader of Tuskegee Institute.

“We are fortunate to have Panther Branch Rosenwald School within walking distance of the Garden,” said Avent. “We are thrilled to work with Pastor Robinson and his team to enhance the landscaping of this newly restored, nationally significant landmark.

Open each season for just two weekends, the spring 2022 Open Garden dates are April 29-May 1 and May 6-8. Hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 8 AM until 5 PM, and Sundays 1-5 PM – admission is free.

“We hope you’ll come join us and see all the plants in bloom,” said Tony Avent, founder and benefactor. “Spring is a time to see an almost overwhelming diversity of plants grown in this region. Thousands of plants will be available to take home for Mother’s Day and gardening.”

“Every plant that goes into the ground pulls CO2 out of the atmosphere,” added Avent. “That’s undoubtedly a good thing.”

Juniper Level Botanic Garden was established in 1986 by Tony Avent and his late wife, Michelle. Over the past 36-years, with a mission to collect, preserve, propagate, and share the world’s botanic diversity, the garden has accumulated one of the top five plant collections in the United States with over 28,000 taxa (plant collections).

To ensure that Juniper Level Botanic Garden maintains and shares one of the top collections in the nation, Tony and Anita Avent gifted the garden to NC State University, one of the leading horticulture universities in the country. “We set up an endowment through the university that, when fully funded, will allow us to open full-time as a public garden,” said Avent.

Two North Carolina landmarks will open for public viewing two weekends in February-March 2022

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Located one-quarter mile apart on Sauls Road in southern Wake County, two North Carolina landmarks will open simultaneously on two weekends for public tours.

Panther Branch Rosenwald School, a Wake County Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, and Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a gift to North Carolina State University, will open Feb. 25-27 and Mar. 4-6 for self-guided tours. There is no admission charge at either location – hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 8 AM until 5 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM.

Constructed in the Colonial Style in 1926 and recently restored by Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church, Panther Branch Rosenwald School was one of over 5,000 schools built in the southern United States by the Rosenwald School Project. This massive undertaking was a joint initiative by Julius Rosenwald, President and Chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and Booker T. Washington, the first leader of Tuskegee Institute.

Following the Civil War and into the mid-20th century, school systems in the South continued to be segregated and underfunded for African American children. By 1928, one in five African American schools in the South was a Rosenwald School, educating an estimated one-third of the teachers and children. The Rosenwald Project is one of the most significant initiatives to improve education for African American children in the 20th century.

Over the past 34-years, with a mission to collect, preserve, propagate, and share the world’s botanic diversity, the garden has amassed one of the top five plant collections in the United States with over 28,000 taxa (plant collections). To ensure the botanic garden remains one of the most unique in the world, Tony and Anita Avent are gifting Juniper Level Botanic Garden to North Carolina State University, one of the top-ranked horticulture universities in the United States.

“We are fortunate to have the Panther Branch Rosenwald School within walking distance of Juniper Level Botanic Garden,” said Avent. “We are also thrilled to partner with the school to enhance the landscaping of this newly restored, nationally significant landmark. It is important to bring more recognition to this part of our history and the incredible collaborative effort that brought about the Rosenwald Schools.”

“There was a time when community took care of the community,” said Jeffrey B. Robinson, Pastor of Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church.  “The partnership with Juniper Level Botanic Garden and the Panther Branch Rosenwald School emulate what was done and what can be done. When people come together, communities become stronger. This collaboration hopefully makes this community feel like home.”
Juniper Level Botanic Garden set up an endowment through NC State University that, when fully funded, will allow us to open full-time as a public garden,” said Avent.

Fundraising efforts for Juniper Level Botanic Garden (tax ID 56-6000756) operate under the auspices of The Endowment Fund of North Carolina State University, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donors receive an official receipt for contributions to the fund.

NC’s Juniper Level Botanic Garden hits the big screen – maybe
Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a gift to NC State University, will open two weekends this fall for public viewing and plant purchases (Sept 17-19 and Sept 2-26, 2021). There is no entry fee, and hours are 8AM-5PM Friday and Saturday and 1-5PM Sunday. GPS directions, 9241 Sauls Road, Raleigh.
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Contacted by members of the production team, Juniper Level Botanic Garden and Plant Delights Nursery supplied forty-five specifically requested plants for The Starling, an upcoming Netflix film starring Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Kevin Kline, and Timothy Olyphant.

A comedy-drama, The Starling explores how nature can help us get through our most challenging times. Lilly (McCarthy), already dealing with grief, hardship, and guilt, becomes comically obsessed with killing a starling that has nested near her backyard garden and begins to harass and attack her. Turning to a local vet, Larry (Kline), the pair strike up an unlikely friendship and work through their own problems together. The film, directed by Theodore Melfi, is based on a Matt Harris screenplay.

The Starling world premiere will be at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is expected on the Netflix schedule this fall. “I hope our plants made the cut,” said Tony Avent, founder and proprietor of Juniper Level Botanic Garden. “I’ll be looking for them in the movie.”

Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a $7.5 million gift from Anita and Tony Avent to NC State University, will open two weekends in September for public viewing and plant purchases. “Each season, we schedule two open garden and nursery weekends,” said Avent.

Fall visitation weekends will be September 17-19 and 24-26. These are the last public visitation weekends until February 2022. Admission is free, and hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 8 AM until 5 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Nursery sales provide operational funding for the garden.

Established in 1988 on a two-acre tract 12-miles south of downtown Raleigh, not-for-profit Juniper Level Botanic Garden has grown into a 28-acre educational, research, and display garden. Avent has participated in 13 foreign and 60 domestic plant expeditions over the past 25 years, amassing one of the world’s most diverse plant collections.

“Currently, we have just over 27,000 different kinds of plants,” explained Avent. “That makes our botanic garden one of the top five collections in the United States. It’s essential for human society to share plants; it’s critical that we not allow plants to go extinct. The rarer a plant is, the more it should be shared. We believe in getting plants where they will thrive and become abundant. Every plant has a place, and every plant has a purpose.”

“We set up an endowment through NC State University. When fully funded, the Juniper Level Botanic Garden endowment will allow us to open full-time as a public garden and a sister to JC Raulston Arboretum,” said Avent.

Fundraising efforts for Juniper Level Botanic Garden (tax ID 56-6000756) operate under the auspices of The Endowment Fund of North Carolina State University, a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donors receive an official receipt for contributions to the fund.

Gardening boom creates “an almost unprecedented plant shortage in America”

An interview with Tony Avent of Juniper Level Botanic Garden
Agave – Juniper Level Botanic Garden – Raleigh, NC
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – “The Gardening boom of 2020 continues prominently into 2021,” said Tony Avent, founder and proprietor of Juniper Level Botanic Garden and Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh. “Last year, the boom really started with the existing gardeners. Then, the longer COVID went on, we began to see more orders from Gen Xers and millennials. We continue to see an amazing number of even younger gardeners in 2021. Some don’t own their house and are looking for things they can grow indoors. The house plant craze is insane.

“There is also an almost unprecedented plant shortage in America, especially for long-production time plants like trees and shrubs. In many box stores, where 60 percent of Americans buy their plants, there’s a major shortage. Retailers that do not propagate plants are struggling to get a wide range of plants to sell. We are very fortunate because we propagate most things here, but it’s still tough for us to keep up with demand.”

Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a gift to NC State University, will open two weekends this summer for public viewing and plant purchases (July 16-18 and July 23-25). There is no entry fee, and hours are 8AM-5PM Friday and Saturday and 1-5PM Sunday. GPS directions, 9241 Sauls Road, Raleigh.

“We’ll be giving away pads of prickly pear cactus to our visitors at our Summer Open Garden,” said Avent. “I’ve always been fascinated with cactus, so we decided to see how many we could grow. We now have over 150 different kinds of prickly pear cactus – probably the largest collection in the world. Since we reign them in annually, we’re giving cactus pads to our visitors. You can plant them at home and enjoy the North American native prickly pear cactus. The flower colors range the spectrum of the rainbow, and the cactus is edible. Native Americans have used this cactus as a food crop for years.

“They’re so many amazing plants blooming in the summer and the pollinator activity is incredible. That’s when all the insects and birds are gathering nectar, which they need to survive. If you want a lot of pollinator activity in your garden in the summertime, you need plants that have a burst of flowers.

“Young homeowners are really into the environment and understand the benefit of planting an abundance of diverse plants, while the older generation focused much more on functionality in the garden. The younger people are much more into sustainable gardening, seeking better living without chemicals in the garden. The previous generation was ingrained with the “better living through chemicals” mantra.

“It’s funny, our generation, the Boomers, were generally afraid of insects and brought up that insects were bad. But the younger generations have been taught that insects are really an important part of nature – the more insects you have, the more nature you can bring into your garden and the healthier the whole environment will be. It’s a neat transition to watch.

“Adults and children are invited to come to the Open Garden Days and learn more about insects from our entomologist Bill Reynolds. Bill used to be with the Museum of Natural Science; he’s down to earth, loves nature, and enjoys talking with children. Bill’s an insect collector who’s also an expert on cicadas, which are very much in the news. Bill told me something I didn’t know. ‘Cicadas are the only insect that sweats’. You and your children can learn a lot from Bill.

“We hope that by visiting Juniper Level Botanic Garden people will learn to look at the outside of their homes the same way they view the interior of the house. Garden designers have known this for years, but that’s a new concept for many people. There’s so much going on outside. Get outdoors, get into nature, and create special spaces to have birds, bees, frogs, and cool things you’re not going to have inside your home.

“It’s also imperative that humans don their citizen scientist hats and help preserve plants in their gardens. Plants are going extinct at a pretty incredible rate, and sadly, some people want to hoard them or replant them where they’ve already gone extinct. We’re the opposite. If you want to preserve a plant, plant it, propagate it and share it.

“As soon as we have sufficient funds in our Operational Endowment foundation at NC State University, Juniper Level Botanic Garden will open to the public year-round in perpetuity. But, unfortunately, COVID put a damper on our fundraising over the past 18-months. It’s hard to go ask somebody for large sums of money with a mask on. Actually, it’s rather tacky. So now that we’re unmasked, we’re hoping to get back onto some more significant fundraisers. But, if we could get a million people to donate $17 each, we’re there. We’re open. That’s all it takes,” said Avent.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a $7.5 million gift to North Carolina State University, will open eight weekends during 2021 for public viewing, plant purchases, and free advice from the experts. There is no admission fee.

“Two open garden weekends are scheduled each season,” said founder and benefactor Tony Avent. Click for open garden dates and information

“With more people working and staying at home and trapped indoors, gardening boomed throughout 2020,” said Avent. “Gardening allows us to get outside and draw healing energy from the earth. Gardening is especially beneficial during tough times, not to mention the beauty and joy it brings.”

Established in 1988 south of downtown Raleigh, the not-for-profit Juniper Level Botanic Garden has grown into a 28-acre conservation and inspiration garden whose mission is to discover, grow, study, propagate and share the world’s flora.

Participating in dozens of domestic and international plant expeditions since the mid-90s, Avent amassed one of the world’s most diverse plant collections. “Currently, we have just over 27,000 different kinds of plants,” explained Avent. “That makes our botanic garden one of the top five collections in the United States.

“We knew the climate was changing and wanted to preserve plants. Many of the plants we found on our trips are now extinct in the wild, and we’re the only place they exist. The more the climate changes, the more paramount it becomes to preserve these plants for human benefit.

“We have always had a close connection with North Carolina State University and JC Raulston Arboretum. The Arboretum’s mission and ours are identical. To collect, study, propagate and share plants. The Arboretum’s primary focus is woody plants, and Juniper Level’s focus is primarily perennial plants.

“Raulston Arboretum currently has about 7,000 different plants. Between this collection and the 27,000 at Juniper Level, the result is one of the largest and top collections in the world of genetics.

“We set up an endowment through the university. When the endowment for the garden is fully funded, that will allow us to open full-time as a public garden and a sister to Raulston Arboretum,” added Avent.

Meanwhile, operational funding for Juniper Level Botanic Garden continues to be provided by plant sales, growing and shipping over 100,000 plants each year, and selling plants during the open garden weekends.

Fall splendor – Raleigh’s Juniper Level Botanic Garden opens two weekends in September
(Sept. 18-20 and Sept. 25-27)
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a $7.5 million gift to North Carolina State University, will open two weekends in September for public viewing and plant purchases. These are the last public visitation weekends until February 2021.

“For each season, we schedule two open garden and nursery weekends,” said Tony Avent, founder and benefactor. “As with every season, fall is a time the garden transitions dramatically. The summer plants peak, and the fall plants start to put on their show. It’s a wonderful juxtaposition.”

Fall visitation weekends are Sept. 18-20 and Sept. 25-27. Visitors can stroll the gardens and shop for fall plantings in the greenhouses of Plant Delights Nursery. Admission is free, and reservations are not required. Hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 8 AM until 5 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Nursery sales provide operational funding for Juniper Level Botanic Garden.

“Many people love fall because you still have warm days but cool nights,” said Avent. “People will begin to think about gardening again as the night temperatures drop down.

“The ornamental grasses are the plants for fall. They’re just incredible as they come up with a beautiful plume and fine textures. You see completely different textures as the garden changes from summer to fall. The elephant ears peak in the September timeframe. And, we’ve known chrysanthemums for years as a staple of the fall garden. Fall is an amazing transition.”

Gardening booms in 2020

An interview with Tony Avent of Juniper Level Botanic Garden
Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a gift to NC State University, will open for public viewing two weekends this summer: July 10-12 and July 17-19.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA – “Gardening is booming in all parts of the country, and nurseries have struggled to keep up with the unprecedented and unexpected demand,” said global plantsman, Tony Avent, founder and proprietor of Juniper Level Botanic Garden and Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh.

“Gardening is a huge pastime in America, but no one was prepared for this. Nurseries are propagating as fast as they can and shipping as quickly as they can. People have reconnected with the earth, and every plant that goes into the ground pulls carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. That’s undoubtedly a good thing.

“I believe the bulk of the boom is coming from existing gardeners. However, at our open houses, we see a tremendous number of younger people, generations X, Y, and Z. They’re interested in connecting to nature and having a garden experience in a different way than their parents or grandparents, who were all about better living through chemicals. They’re learning to be more a part of nature, to garden more sustainably.

“Summer is an incredible time in the garden. At our open house, you’ll see a range of plants you’ve never seen. Many plants don’t emerge until mid-June, early July. People who don’t see the gardens in summer miss so many things. They miss many of our great native perennials in the Aster family – so many beautiful gold flowers.

“All the tropical-looking plants are at their peak in the summer months; the cannas, the elephant ears, so many of the aroids [love lilies], and all kinds of crazy things. These are at their peak in the garden, so we see a peak in sales of tropical-looking plants in the summer.

“Pollinators are also more active in the summer months; all the bees, the native bees, the honeybees, and the amazing wasps. Wasps are actually predators of many beetles, so you want them in your garden. Some gardeners are caught up in spraying every time they see an insect, but there are naturally balanced systems in place to take care of pests as long as your plants aren’t stressed. If you provide a sustainable environment, there is balance. When a pest arrives, another insect will take it out. The birds also dine on many problematic insects.

“Nature is fascinating, and there is no more active time than summer. Everything is fully at work. We invite you to bring your children to our open houses and teach your children; or, let us help you teach them. We have a full-time entomologist on staff to teach people about insects and how insects work in the garden. Maybe we can get away from the concept that bugs are bad – they are critical to our life and nature.

“In the summer, you’ll find a 25 to 30-degree difference just walking through sections of Juniper Level Botanic Garden. A garden is like a house. It has walls. It has ceilings. It has the floor. It has furniture, and it has decorations. But we often don’t think of the outside of our house like we do the inside. So, when you walk outside, if you have a ceiling, the trees, it's going to be much cooler in there. Some plants love that baking sun, other plants like to have the filtered light of the tree canopy.
“Many people also think you cannot plant in the summer, which is simply not true. The establishment time for a plant is so much faster in the summer months, and the watering time for new plants is much shorter. If you plant in the winter, you can get by with infrequent waterings, but if you plant in summer, you need to water every day. But the tradeoff is that you only have to water for a week or so before the plant is fully established.

“Gardening is about diversity. Hopefully, we’ve learned that we, as a society, are better with diversity. Gardens are the same way; we want everyone to have an incredibly diverse garden. That way, the garden has something for all the pollinators and something for every season for people to enjoy. That’s what we hope to show people when they come to visit.

“It’s also important for human society to share plants; it’s critical that we not allow plants to go extinct. The rarer a plant is, the more it should be shared. We believe in getting plants where they will thrive and become abundant.

“We’ve joined forces with NC State University and JC Raulston Arboretum because we have the same mission. Secure the plants, study the plants, propagate the plants, and share the plants. It’s so important to our society. Every plant has a place, and every plant has a purpose,” said Tony Avent.
