Stubb's Bar-B-Q

Texas Bar-B-Q Legend

Born in Navasota Texas, C. B. “Stubb” Stubblefield served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. A staff sergeant in the 96th Field Artillery, (the last all-black infantry unit). He was a respected leader and recipient of two purple hearts.

Rumor has it while in the trenches, he seared up bite-sized delights to his fellow troops using the hot tail pipe of an army tank and played blues over the field radios. “Made with love”, he’d grin and hand over the goods. After being injured, he was transferred to the mess hall. If given instruction by anyone, he’d loudly growl, “I AM the cook!” Stubb was a gritty, soulful character whose feel good generosity brought people together.

In 1968, “Stubb’s Bar-B-Q” in Lubbock was opened. Stubb’s Sunday Night Jams were ground zero soon for many soon to be famous musicians who were delighted to play for their dinner. The likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters, B.B King, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstadt & the Fabulous Thunderbirds to name a few. Stubb’s Legendary Kitchen, Inc. was founded in 1990 and distributes sauces, rubs and marinades nationally. While Stubb left us in 1995, his legend lives on in Austin where you can always find good barbecue and soulful music, made with love.
