Saint Roastery
Interior Design
Recently 441 Design Studio designed a coffee shop and roastery in Bucharest, Romania.
The studio took inspiration from the current coffee industry aesthetic, characterized by clean minimalism. The coffee area is close to the entrance and has a wood countertop. The cabinet is wrapped in powder-coated profiled sheeting, commonly used for roofs and fences. Branding is a key element to 441's design of the coffee shop. Small graphic touches can also be seen on the walls, across custom-made take away stickers, and on other branded products. With the thought of the coffee roasting process in mind and the roaster itself, the industrial look came almost involuntarily. The blackness of the roaster took over the metallic elements of the furniture. In order to temper everything. elements of oak were used in order to give some warmth to the space. The designers inserted large panels of glass into the the space to provide daylight and views between the roastery and the coffee shop. The two area, the coffee shop and the roastery have been treated differently, yet retaining the harmony of style through complementary colours. The distinction between the two was done by treating the floor with two types of ceramics. In the area of the cafe was used a gray ceramic plating in big boards and in the area of roasting, in order to attract more attention was used a chess plate, the plates being 1: 2 of the big ones.
The green chosen in the roasting area is not by chance. The color was originally found only on special ceramics, created by a thinly applied glaze that transformed iron oxide from ferric to ferrous iron as it fired in the oven. The name of the color is "Celadon" and it is supposed to be the name of a fictional French character who adorned his clothes with ribbons in this color. For centuries, in China this hue of green was called "mi se", meaning the mysterious color.
The chairs used in the design are from Ton, a company with tradition in the Czech Republic. In the café area, because of the metal frame furniture, black chairs were used, while in the front of the roaster were used oak chairs. There is also a seating area that runs alongside the windows, allowing visitors to look out. Small tables can accommodate small parties, while larger groups can sit around a high-level table called "the friendship table" overlooking the roaster.
