The design brief was very clear: to create a A4 page brochure, printed in black and white with a Swiss style layout. Although the simplicity of the task was evident, the need to create an object visually capable of conveying the subject matter of the document was not.

The text entitled “The creation of the Tourism Fund and the 1960’s Boom -Tourism, the strategic sector for development” is a chapter from a book on Tourism in Portugal. This text in particular describes the evolution of the relation between Tourism and the Portuguese Governments and State Institutions during the fifties until the seventies. Moreover, it bears upon the part Tourism had in the country’s economic development.
One of the most important features that Portugal has to offer to tourists is the sun. Furthermore, the cities and destinations either mention in the text or shown in the images are often seaside and more sought-after locations during summertime. Therefore, the warm and sunny weather plays a significant role in the Portuguese touristic scene.

The layout created is based on a 3 x 7-unit grid with a very Swiss style appearance. In addition, the font used also highlights that appearance considering its similarity to fonts adopted in that style. It is called “Suisse” and was designed by Swiss Typefaces Type foundry. Finally, the binding with a metal spiral was something regularly adopted in the International Typographic Style.

Besides that, there is a black and white gradient circle in every page moving with every page turn from bottom to top, just like the sun so important for the reasons mention before. Likewise, the yellow paper in which the brochure was printed further emphasizes that. At the same time, the movement of the circle accentuates the evolution described in the text. These characteristics are quite playful and witty making the object quite appealing. Lastly, the first page presents both the title and subtitle in a typographic composition reiterating the concepts already explained.
