open.mp Branding and Website

"open.mp" is an open-source multiplayer game framework and community of developers.

The project needed a visual identity and a landing page, so I developed a set of colours, a logo, a wordmark and built a simple landing page for the project.
Being an open-source project, openness was at the core of the theming behind the early iterations. Symbolising this visually was achieved by removing the counter elements of the enclosed characters.
In addition to this, the project's home is on the web and is fueled by a team of contributors from around the globe. So the wordmark included the period character from the project's domain name "open.mp" and this became a central element of the mark.
Like most of my web-oriented branding work, I focused on a flexible set of colours that work well on both light and dark backgrounds. The icon was to be used in a wide variety of situations from a site favicon to a GitHub icon. The homepage had a dark background while GitHub has a lighter colour theme. As a result, a variety of combinations were produced.
The website had a simple job: to introduce the project and provide development updates.

However, being a worldwide community focused project, multiple languages and accessibility was key. The site was built with a translation layer at the core and at the time of writing this, 45 contributors have helped translate the site into 25 different languages.
As the project nears completion, the site will also need to evolve to serve new requirements.
