1st window | City founding legend
Every legend has its superheroes: it was once in 1250 ... after a dispute with the Bishop of Verden, residents left the market settlement at the Oldenstadt monastery with their mayor Bernhard Nigebuhr to found their own town west of Ilmenau: Löwenwolde - later known as Uelzen.
2nd window | St. Mary's Church
The St. Marien Church was built soon after the city was founded. The three-aisled hall church, testimony to the north German brick Gothic, was consecrated in 1292 by the Bishop of Verden. The apostle chapel was built in 1357, the high choir in 1380, and the church tower in 1400, which burned down in 1646 and 1945. A golden candlestick with a double Madonna adorns the inside.
3rd window | The plague
The plague, or "Black Death", devastated all of Europe from 1348. Since the transmission through fleas is unknown, many people believe that the apocalypse has begun. In Uelzen, almost 40 percent of the population died in this epidemic and in 1597 in a second. Religious women take care of the plague sick in the Holy Spirit Foundation.
4. Window | Blooming Hanseatic period
Uelzen is first mentioned in 1374 as a member of the powerful Hanseatic League, with trade relations to Livonia, Spain and England. In 1470, a Hanseatic Day with 15 cities took place in Uelzen. The legendary Golden Ship, the symbol of Uzen, is evidence of this heyday.
5. Window | Uelzener poor feed
1397 - after one year of occupation during the satellite war, the city council decides out of gratitude "for eternal times ... we want to hold a mass ... and boil a ram ... and give bread ... to poor people who need it for God's sake . “To this day, the Uelzen arm feeding is one of the oldest charitable events in the world.
