In this layout re-design, I consider the negative space of each page, how the eye travels around each spread, contrast of scale and type styles, and how typographic choices can reinforce the content of this particular article. I use a grid system, sometimes breaking that system for conceptual explorations. In the introductory cover, I use typography and an image to call attention to one of the main themes in the article, censorship. I use expressive type on the first page to highlight the sense of toppling with my use of rotating "e"s, hyphenation to disrupt the word, "cripple," and the ascension of certain letters in the word, "canon" to conjure upward movement. Other examples of conceptual visual choices that I make can be found throughout the design, as I often push words into the margins and add strategically large amounts of kerning to distinct words. I pair a bold slab san serif typeface with a couple of old-style serif ones, as both a thematic and visual choice. I love this project for many reasons, but mostly because it made me consider surface treatments as well as contextual information.
