For my artworks I often bury paper for several weeks in the earth. After the excavation, the paper looks very weathered. The paper can be torn here and there and glued again; there may also be holes in it from acorns, twigs or stones in the ground. It is a job to get the paper dry and "clean" with patience afterwards. My fascination for rust provides new combinations.

After having sewn the signatures on Jute-rope, I buried the entire book in the earth for 2 weeks. The excavated book looks (medieval) old. I covered the boards with painter's cloth which lay in the earth for 2 months. The result is a very special book, partly due to the rusted book attachment on the front and back of the book.
