The Settlers of Catan
The brief was to find a boardgame (existing or new) and produce a new and
improved version. It could be a classic, or a new game of our creation. As long
as you can play it on a table, with a physical board, it was eligable for re-design.
Being a die-hard fan, I launched into a re-design of The Settlers of Catan. The
game is normally packaged in a large cardboard box w/ blister pack. I sought to
re-create the board using only one sustainable material, while reducing setup
time & turning the game into one unified experience. The game now comes with
rules and storage all built within itself.
I had the pleasure of art directing my friend (and talented illustrator) Garret Richard
during the process of this design. Together, we developed a unique world for a new
Catan, and created a visual language to engage the player in the story.
