Muhammad Ismail.
Ismail bhai of the Mithakali bazaar. Yusuf kaka of his dear friends since he looks like the Indian cricketer Yusuf pathan.
Ismail is a 55 years old man from Ahmadabad. He has been a car mechanic for the last 35 years. Now he owns a mechanic shop in Mithakali.His body type is not that fat bulky, but well built. He weighs around 75 kg and 178 cm tall. His skin has turned dark and is shining with oil and Greece. He has started going bold and the salt and pepper hair is dry due to dust and smoke. His eyes are brownish black.
He is a religious person who has been keeping his beard for many years. He shaves off his mustache twice in a week. The white dots of hair are visible on his serious, confident pentagon shaped face.
He has a ‘mala’ in his neck which has a black squarish locket. He always keeps a yellow colored click pen in the pockets of his torn shirt. He doesn’t usually care about his dressings. His torn clothes are turned black due to the oil, dirt and the Greece. He has a cotton towel hanging from his right pocket of his pants. He always wears a black shoe with tightly tied black lays. Sometimes he wears a cap of a mix of burnt Cena and sap green which also has black patches.
He has his own style of talking. He keeps on moving his fingers through his thick beard and hair.
He is a hardworking mechanic. His days start at 9.30 am and ends at around9.00-10.00 pm. He loves hearing songs during working hours. He plays music in the cars from the workshop.
He has a very thick voice and he clears his throat when ever he starts talking and ends with a smile.`
He is very fast in movements. (walking.) He has a habit of finishing everything fast and moving on to another. He pushes up his pants when he sits on the ground.
Social characteristics
As a mechanic, he is happy in life. He gets around 35000 – 40000rs monthly.
In his childhood, though he has taste in mechanics and machinery he wanted to be an architect. The architecture of the old buildings and the mosque used to attract him in early days. But after taking science as a subject to study in 10th, he couldn’t pass the exams and he had to give up his studies and dreams and joint the mechanic shop. He used to make miniature models of buildings and vehicles out of thermocol and cardboard. Now he has moved on and is taking care of his family which includes his mother, wife and 2 children.
Attributes and attitudes
He believes in logic and experience other than bookish knowledge. Whatever he has learned in life, he learned through his logic and experience.
His Workshop is on the land of the mosque trust. 13 years ago, the govt. had issues with the trust and broken down everything including his shop. The filed case is still going on in the high court. Now he is struggling to get back the glory of the shop.
His elder son, Hisham, wants to be a religious scholar. So, he doesn’t know how long the mechanic shop will be there with him. But he is confident of his skills and work. He seems to be very rough in looks, but he is very light hearted and sensitive. He is more of an introvert, but opens up with close friends(ambivert).His reactions towards everything proves how matured he has became with experience .
He wants to do difficult things in work and that’s what motivates him.
There are bad customers who doesn’t know much about vehicles. It is scary for him when they come and argue. He has fears of how to approach new technologies with his old knowledge. But he survives with his logic. The future of his kids and the repairing shop also scare him.
One of the weakness that he has is for love. He is sad about the conflict in the name of religion and caste in Gujarat.
Though dogs are untouchables according to his religion, he feeds all animals including dogs every day. A picture of the quote from the holy Quran on the walls of the shop also shows his believes.
