Suncoast Credit Union takes pride in being a leader in sustainability in our community, and their new 108,000 square-foot, three-story administrative office building demonstrates this commitment by implementing cutting-edge environmental initiatives and fostering healthy lifestyles for employees and guests alike.
The building footprint respects the site by avoiding established vegetation and grand oak trees. Although some diseased trees could not be saved, the lumber harvested was repurposed into custom furniture and is now found throughout the building. Florida-friendly and drought tolerant plants achieve regional sustainability goals of conserving water and sculpt the parking areas. Pedestrians meander along a 1/3 mile path through the preserved trees, passing by a putting green intended for employee recreation. These features serve as an example of how the built environment can integrate and enhance the existing natural context.
Suncoast Credit Union’s commitment to sustainability is also evident through the use of active and passive systems. Twelve hundred photovoltaic panels provide nearly enough energy to achieve net-zero consumption. The primary facades are oriented opposite of the east-west axis to minimize solar heat gain. High-performance glazing transmits daylight without additional heat loads and also reduces demand on LED lighting. Electrical and mechanical systems tie into an automated energy management system with on-site performance monitoring to ensure occupant comfort.
Occupant wellbeing is further supported by centrally locating a monumental stair to encourage active lifestyles. Collaborative work areas along circulation paths engage team members in discussions and inspire meaningful involvement within the organization. Large communal break rooms on every floor and private spaces reserved for nursing mothers provide basic needs that are often unmet. The access flooring system throughout the building keeps air close to all occupants and allows for flexibility. Modular workstations and reconfigurable partitions help prepare for anticipated growth. A large auditorium accommodates corporate and community events.
