Call Your Representative

Change Congress (now Fix Congress First) already had a site and blog in place, but they needed a simple interactive tool to help voters find their representatives and discover whether or not they were supporters of the bill. Ultimately we wanted to make it easy for users to see the status of the campaign and get in touch with their reps to request their support.

I wanted to make the process as painless as possible, so I boiled it down into two parts. First, you look at a big picture page that shows the supporter status of every representative, as well as the donations they have "lost" from activist voters. You can enter your zip code to filter this list down to your representatives in the House and Senate.

If the rep isn't a supporter, you click a "whip" button and you go to a page that provides you with the phone number of their office and some suggestions for what to say when you call. We also showed the number of people who called, a simple detail that people loved as it helped them feel like they were taking part in a larger cause.

I love this project as an example of how thoughtful UI can even make things like social change easier and more accessible to everyone.
