Siemens Smart Lock C320

Siemens asked us to design their very first series of smart locks, to be launched in the Chinese in the market where this typology of product is very popular.

The key was to find a balance by adapting the consolidated Siemens core design values to a whole new series of products while making it appealing to the Chinese market.

The result is a simple and clean design with a twist where the CMF (colours, materials and finishes) plays both a cosmetic and a functional role (the brushed IML ABS surface on the top of the keypad doesn't show the fingerprints on his surface).

This is the first and the more basic of the two different models we designed (the second one comes with higher specs and will be posted here soon), it was officially presented to the public in July 2019 and it will be available to purchase in September 2019.

Simply designed, thoughtfully crafted

The metal brushed finish on the top surface i reminiscent of an armor shell that protects the lock, despite the fact that it's made in plastic.

It's made by IML injection moulding, a technique that allow to attack a thin textured layer on the top of a plastic surface.
This also allow the light of the pincode display to pass through the shell while being completely invisible when it's not used.
We carefully selected the right texture to apply after considering a huge variety of finishes.

When safety it's easy to reach

We decided to place the fingerprint sensor on the front of the handle, this allows the users to unlock and open the door at the same time with one single movement by using one hand.

Visual and tactile experience

The different finish and color between the metal frame and the IML printed shell creates visual and tactile contrast making the lock adaptable to multiple environment situation and material matches.

Cosmetic but functional

When not in use the password keypad remain invisible under the IML plastic surface.
This solution is much more discreet than a common glass keypad solution, we believe this could prevents strangers from trying to input a password.

Easy to see, intuitive to use

The keypad is back illuminated for a perfect viewing during the night, a proximity sensor embed in the lock lights up the display automatically when we arrive in front of our door and it switches off when the door opens.

The door can be locked from inside by turning the revolving lock and it can be unlocked by simply pushing the button conveniently placed on the front of the handle.

Different colors for different environments

The smart lock comes with three different finishes in order to match the huge variety of interior design and door finishes, as the Interior design trends in China are evolving fast and we wanted to supply a variety of colors that could follow this transformation without becoming obsolete.
