Truyện ngắn này nói về một cậu bé tình cờ phát hiện ông hàng xóm thân thiết của mình là một họa sĩ. Người họa sĩ già trong truyện có một cuộc sống bình lặng và vẫn hành nghề tới khi lớn tuổi. Vì vậy mình muốn sử dụng màu sắc hơi trầm một chút khi vẽ căn phòng của ông, để thể hiện sự ấm áp và cũ kĩ, nhuốm màu thời gian của nó, nhưng vẫn ngọt ngào để thể hiện căn phòng trong góc nhìn của một đứa trẻ: nhiều màu sắc, nhiều họa cụ linh tinh và thú vị.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
This is an illustration for a short story of the same name by Vo Manh Hao, published on the children magazine "Nhi dong" no.17.
The story is written to commemorate Vietnam's Unification Day, 30th April. It is a story of how a little boy discovered that the food in his favorite diner wasn't made by the elderly mistress of the diner. Rather, it was her husband, who the boy often called "Fifth Grandpa".
The story reaches its climax when the boy discovered that Fifth Grandpa has just finished a painting depicting Vietnamese people of all classes rejoicing on Unification Day, and he was also painted as a character in the painting. So that's why I chose this scene to represent the story.
The sketch
The illustration is created on a digital A4 format.
The story doesn't have a clear description of the characters' appearances, so I took some liberty in designing them.
The little boy is a typical schoolboy in his old kindergarten uniform worn as pajamas.
Fifth Grandpa is a big old man (since he cooks really well so I assumed he must love food and ate a lot :) He wears boxers and striped tank tops (typical Vietnamese men wear white tank tops, but since he's an artist, maybe he wants to have more color in his working clothes :)
I tried to create the intimate mood of his small and old painting room: a bit crowded with art supplies, bookcase and a large canvas. The wall is old, with random drawings and paintings pasted all over it.
