The book series

The book series Anthology of Ukrainian film criticism of the 1920s for Dovzhenko Centre, an art venue and the National Film Archive in Kyiv

The most interesting part of this work was the concept solution of the book covers. We researched a lot of materials related to a film industry of 1920s and decided to make a homage to the famous poster ‘Der Film’ by Josef Muller-Broeckmann. Besides obvious common film theme, it was interesting to realize an idea of consequent layering and movement of film frames beyond the two-dimensional borders of film screen and to apply basic montage principles to book design.

So we risked to use a vellum for the cover and divided two words of the name on two levels: first word is 'КІНО' (film), which repeats in each volume in the book series, printed on the half transparent vellum, so that you can see the second word of the title, which is printed on a black cardboard. The whole construction creates the effect of snapped up interframe moment. The font for word 'КІНО' (film) was reconstructed from an eponymous Ukrainian magazine published in the 1920-30s.
