WWP Urges Lawmakers to Take Action on Several Veteran

In business for more than four decades, Hicksville, New York-based Godsell Construction Corporation is led by Arthur Godsell, who serves as the company’s president. A civic-minded resident of Long Island, Arthur Godsell is a longtime supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), an organization devoted to providing care and resources to combat-wounded veterans after they leave the military.

In May 2019, WWP leadership traveled to Capitol Hill to visit with Senate lawmakers on the Committee for Veteran’s Affairs. During their testimony, WWP officials lent their public support to a number of bills currently before Congress that would address major hurdles facing veterans, such as mental health, education, increasing quality of medical care, and the need for a modernized electronic health records system at VA hospitals nationwide. One bill in particular that WWP representatives highlighted was Senate Bill 785, the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019.

WWP has placed suicide prevention at the top of its list of priorities, as has the VA. Senate Bill 785 would help address this issue through a number of initiatives that would provide veterans with better access to care as they leave active duty service. The bill also provides much-needed funding for mental health research.

In his comments, WWP vice president of independence services and mental health, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Michael Richardson stated that legislative solutions, as well as partnerships with key community stakeholders, are key in de-stigmatizing the conversation about mental health. That dialogue, alongside government support and the help of organizations like WWP, is vital to tackling the widespread need for suicide prevention among veterans.
