The Fresh Air Fund's Impact on New York City Children

Based in Long Island, NY, Arthur Godsell is the president and co-owner of Godsell Construction Corporation, where he has worked since 1975. Arthur Godsell is very involved in the community and supports many philanthropic efforts, including the Fresh Air Fund.

Founded in 1877, the Fresh Air Fund is a nonprofit that works with children from the underserved communities of New York City. The organization supplies these children with opportunities to experience outdoor summer adventures through stays at sleepaway camps and with host families. These excursions give children positive memories of new experiences and the chance to form new friendships.

The Fresh Air Fund has served more than 1.8 million children. In 2018, more than half of the children came from the city’s most under-resourced communities, and more than 65 percent of participants were experiencing their first overnight away from their families. Additionally, participants represented more than 60 countries of origin and 21 languages. These programs are completely free for families that meet income guidelines, and nearly 75 percent of all participants re-apply for another summer experience.
