In 2018, the Hawaii Prevention and Education Program in collaboration with Hawaii Public Health Institute: Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii developed Educational Resource Guides to provide facts, tips and resources for parents, educators, and other youth influencers to help address the dangerous surge of youth vaping in Hawaii.

OrangeRoc created an aesthetically appealing design with compelling, organized content and visually pleasing original infographics that accurately conveyed quantitative and qualitative health information and data. Over 46,000 printed Educational Resource guides were requested and distributed statewide in just six months, with the initial printing depleted in two months. It is challenging to keep up with the demand for these materials from schools statewide.

The Vaping Education Resource materials continue to be distributed at parent meetings, school assemblies, and community sessions, as well as major conferences, the 2019 Legislative Session and by pediatricians statewide. 

The Resource Guides were valuable tools for educating legislators about the vaping epidemic among Hawaii’s youth. They were shared at meetings and at hearings by tobacco control advocates to inform lawmakers that action is needed to protect our keiki from a lifetime of nicotine addiction. The Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA), the University of Hawaii, the Department of Health, the Department of Education, public health and medical professionals and many youth organizations strongly supported bills to curb vaping use by youth.

The Vaping Education Resource Guides are available electronically on the Department of
Health’s website. Activity to the website to view and download the content focusing on e-
cigarettes are being tracked and has steadily increased.

Tobacco Prevention Education Program has not yet evaluated the Vaping
Educational Resource Guides for Parents and Educators, but has received highly favorable comments from parents, teachers, and others who reach youth and young adults (pediatricians, health professionals, coaches, counselors). Many comment that the materials provide important information and are very beneficial for educating youth about vaping. Schools and communities on every island are using the resource guides, and TPEP continues to receive numerous requests for the popular vaping educational materials.
