Everything is Ephemeral
A real-time visualization of births and deaths around the world. A rotating phosphorescent display, gradually fading. A reflection on the ephemeral nature of everything, and on our relationship to life, death, humanity, and the world around us.
The artwork Everything is Ephemeral lets you contemplate births and deaths in real time based on global statistics. For each birth a white dot, for each death a black dot, indefinitely scrolling. A dizzying and disturbing vision of what humanity really represents as the ever-changing sum of individuals.
Superimposed are also scrolling words, phrases, like a litany tirelessly recalling the ephemeral character of our ideas, our desires, our fears, but also of everything from the smallest grain of sand to the entire universe. Everything is ephemeral, we are ephemeral, and all is only an eternal beginning.
Everything is Ephemeral consists of a generative display using a bar of LEDs to illuminate line by line, pixel by pixel, a scrolling phosphorescent surface. New inscriptions thus constantly cover the previous ones, sometimes giving a glimpse of the traces of past impressions.
