the commute exchange
The Commute Exchange is a hypothetical project in Melbourne, in which letter templates and pens are offered on public transport (trains, trams and buses), inviting commuters to write letters in exchange for another commuter’s letter from the letter box. This is for the brooding commuter to share thoughts, ideas, inspiration to a stranger whilst the world passes by.
Through this experience, commuters can share and receive enlightening thoughts, opinions and stories. Perhaps they will learn about the frustrations in the other’s work day, a sudden realisation someone had about their family life, or how nervous someone is about their upcoming audition.
There is too much we think about that we never share that can inspire others. It just so happens that these thoughts surface most on our daily commutes, where we are so quiet and avoid conversation. This project aims to bring inspire the ordinary commuter, and bring these people together through the old medium of letter writing.
