INDIA’S BUSIEST SEAPORTS
A look at how container traffic handling has evolved at India’s five busiest seaports from financial year 1998-99 to FY16

TOTAL CONTAINER TRAFFIC at 13 major ports in India grew 9.47% compounded annually from financial year 1998-99 to FY16, from 24.12 million tonnes to 123.17 million tonnes. V.O. Chidambaranar Port (formerly known as Tuticorin Port) saw the highest traffic growth of 13.78%, from 1.21 million tonnes to 12.39 million tonnes. Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), Mumbai, is the busiest port in the country: its total container traffic grew 11.48%, from 8.03 million tonnes to 56.79 million tonnes. The loaded container traffic, or outbound cargo movement, at the ports grew 9.02%, from 12.25 million tonnes to 58.02 million tonnes, and unloaded container traffic, inbound cargo movement, grew 9.92%, from 11.86 million tonnes to 65.15 million tonnes.
