A Night in Chester

A Night in Chester

With a population of 118,200 and a bustling tourist industry there is scarcely a time during the day when you can see Chester at its most peaceful. Without the distraction of shoppers bobbing in and out of shops, cars and buses speeding down the streets, and tourists stopping to photograph the second most photographed clock in the world, the tranquillity of the city during the night is a contrast to the day.

The purpose of this project was to show the people of Chester their own city during the twilight hours. With a constant stream of people winding their way through the streets it becomes difficult to just stop and appreciate the historic city they live in. When all the distractions are removed and the streets are deserted the beauty of the city shines through.

During the night hours of Chester, as with many other cities, there is a distinct shift in atmosphere. When the streets are busiest the city becomes a cacophony of cars, sirens, shoppers, planes, helicopters, and more and it’s easy to get engulfed by, and join in. However, during the night it’s different, it feels wrong to make noise, as though you have stumbled upon some solemn holy ceremony, and any sound above a whisper is a shout.
