This project explores the possibilities of creating co-design and cross-collaborative processes which work at building sustainable relationships and creating an enabling ecosystem. The local context we explore is working with traditional artisans in Kutch who are well-established in their artisanal practice and have a wealth of over three generations of design heritage to draw from.

This project is a collaboration between students with traditional artisans who are alumni of Somaiya Kala Vidya (SKV). Through a deep immersion in and understanding of the local context, we as students will have the dual role of co-designing with the artisan while building connections within the ecosystem and co-narrating stories of innovation.

The objective of the project is to come up with a design solution using the design tools and artisanal skills that two or more individuals can offer. This Kutch based project aims at exploring the depths and potential of the Bandhani craft and working towards enhancing it.

Tying is an age old practice. The importance of tying comes out in all the cultures with its
own story. Interestingly, Bandhani was also started by accidentally tying a knot.

With this theme, we want to show tying as a contemporary tradition. How it is such an old tradition but it still holds its importance. For us, it is the unity of intent. It is coming In certain cultures people tie threads to make a wish, by taking up this project together we have made a wish.

Malang’ is an amalgamation of ideas that went through carving this theme. It is a collection which is deeply rooted in ties and tying practices that keep bonds stronger than ever.
