ABOUT THE CLIENT

Phoenix Brighton is the largest artist-led arts organisation in the South East of England. Press & Release Artists’ Book Exhibition is a six week show held at Phoenix Brighton that celebrates the rich and multi-faceted world of artists’ books and self-publishing, with a focus on hand-made and limited edition books, and experimental formats. It places books into an imaginative, purpose-built installation within a gallery setting, and encourages visitors to linger and browse.

THE PROJECT BRIEF

To create an arresting and memorable image for use in promoting the Press & Release exhibition guide in both printed and online formats. The image had to embody the spirit of the exhibition, which celebrates the imaginative, edgy world of artists’ books. The image was to feature on the cover of the exhibition guide, posters and e-invite. All artwork and designhad to adhere to Brighton Phoenix branding guidlines.

ILLUSTRATION CONCEPT

The main image is a speculative rendering of a mechanical print press with echoes of Hoe's six-cylinder and the Platen press. I created the illustration in Adobe Illustrator using Wacom Intuous3 graphics tablet.

THE PRESS & RELEASE ARTISTS' BOOK EXHIBTION ILLUSTRATION

I created a variation of the Press & Release illustration header section to use on other promotional material. This illustration incorporated the various artist book formats.

PRESS & RELEASE ARTISTS' BOOK EXHIBITION ILLUSTRATION ALTERNATIVE (WITH BOOK TENDRILS)

I was then commissioned to design the exhibition guide incorporating my original illustration, along with images of artists work and curator's editorial and event listings.

Below is the front and back cover for the A4 exhibition guide. The front (right) had to accomodate the exhibtion title, dates and Phoenix logo. The back (left) had to accomodate exhibition details, events listing, images , logos and a map of the gallery location.

FRONT AND BACK COVER FOR THE EXHIBITION GUIDE

The inside pages had to include images from the artists books, details of the show and related events along with show dates, gallery opening times and website links.
