Multipolar Typography – ISTD 2019

Where Two Worlds Meet conflates and typographically illustrates both sides of the origins of universe debate. With the vast amount of fake news circulating the internet, impartiality is now more important than ever before to ensure that we aren’t taken in by fake news stories. Thorough knowledge of an issue will enhance our understanding of the story and initiate the development of fact-based informed opinions. Through the use of two opposing viewpoints and a third voice which conflates the two, this book examines how inputs from several contributions can reduce the polarity of contemporary side-taking.

The format and visual vocabulary of the publication were influenced by religious scriptures as they were the only source of authentic knowledge for many decades before the age of enlightenment. A largely important design aspect of this publication is the way the two arguments interline in the baseline. This alongside tight margins create tension and visually looks as though the two arguments are consolidating. The interlining of the two arguments was informed by the interlined marginalia that is found in early religious scriptures.

The book format is influenced by the format of the Gutenberg’s Bible. However, due to production restrictions this publication is a slightly smaller size. The typographic night sky references a 360° panoramic star alignment in Grand Canyon on the day of the Ken Ham and Bill Nye’s debate. A three spread typographic interpretation of the star alignment conflate the two arguments in a visual manner, creating a middle ground.

The colours of the prelims and also the chapter leaves represents the RGB screen colours as this debate was streamed online, permitting users to watch it on their personal screens. To keep in with the theme of being aware of the universe and our planet, the stock chosen is sustainable and has 100% post-consumer content. The stock used is uncoated, the softly textured feel adds to the character of the publication.

This publication has been awarded an ISTD membership.
