From Digital to Design: Music and Soundwaves as the Basis for Customized Surface and Furniture Design
After weeks of preparation and researching the sound and music visualizers, I came up with a project which took digital readings of soundwaves from multiple songs/sound using programs such as Garageband and Logic, and converting the curves and oscillations shown in the 2nd representation of the soundwaves into 3-D surfaces in a program called Rhino. I then took the digital 3-D surfaces and converted them into STL files to be cnc’d (using a numerical controlled milling machine) upon large wood panels to create the surfaces of a chair and a side table based on the digital 3-D surfaces. In the images shown below one can see the surfaces of the furniture pieces before they were finished with india ink a sealant. And then the finished pieces, and the details of their design (the chair has the “Landscape of Sound” logo on the back, and the side table is lazer cut with the name of the artist and the song.
