The Unique Challenges of Underwater Photography

PADI-certified scuba diver Marc Morale is the owner of Hamilton Construction in Frankfort, IL. The Chicago professional’s passion for the ocean began in his childhood and has steadily grown. Now, Marc Morale often takes underwater photos and videos while diving.

Water is roughly 800 times denser than air and absorbs light at a much higher rate. This creates a unique challenge for underwater videographers and photographers who are forced to address these lighting issues if they want clear and colorful pictures.

As divers move farther down from the surface, they notice that colors gradually disappear in the dim light. This often starts with reds at about five meters and continues until the only clear color is blue at roughly 30 meters. Because of this, images captured in deep water may look monochromatic.

In addition, water clarity diminishes as objects get farther from the camera. Because of this, distant objects lack the sharpness and contrast that most photographers seek in their work.

Underwater lighting also depends on surface conditions. Cloudy days with minimal sunlight obviously provide less light underwater. This makes both the color and contrast issues noticeably worse. The same is true when the water surface is choppy and light is cast in varying directions.
