Pechmarie - Tar Mary (Brothers Grimm)

"Pechmarie" (Tar Mary) - from the fairy tale "Frau Holle" (Mother Hulda) by the Brothers Grimm. It originates and is very popular in Hesse, Germany (where I grew up).
When I was a child I thought that Pechmarie only got what she deserved. But while drawing her I grew a bit more sympathetic towards her - and started to dislike her mother intensely. You can find the fairy tale online, check it out. I decided to draw the tar as having some kind of conscience, spreading as soon as it makes contact with the human body. I plan to illustrate some more fairy tales, I love them so much and there are so many which never make it into the "popular domain". I regret that so many of these tales are now told to our children in a cleaned up version. In Germany we listened to/read the original ones and every German child knows that Cinderella's stepsisters disfigured their feet to fit into the shoe. And that Cinderella was a fighter, not a helpless girl with a pretty dress. Which by the way was NOT provided by a fairy godmother... ;-)
