Tromsø International Film Festival
2018 Ident

Design/Art Direction: Tank Design Tromsø
3D and Animation: Netron
Sound: Gaute Barlindhaug

A slightly strange animated universe that references the world of film and the region of northern Norway. Cold, ice, mosquitoes, fish, northern lights, popcorn, film reels, retro 3D glasses, the old red juice mixer in front of the Verdensteateret cinema in Tromsø. And to start it all off: the eye, which was previously a central element in the festival's visual identity.

TIFF is an established festival in the whole region and an institution many have a strong connection to. We chose to work with elements from the festival's history. The many details create associations for those who are familiar with the festival, while the new viewers will feel wonder and curiosity. The ice that freezes the logo at the end reflects the cold climate.

Process
Based on a brief from Tank Design and a mood board with elements they want to include we develop a storyboard outlining the story we want to tell. The storyboard is also used to make an animatic, to get a first sense of the timing.
After storyboard and animatic approval, all assets are modeled, rigged for animation where necessary, and animated. Several shots also require physics simulation of either water or particles.
Liquid simulations in Phoenix FD were used to crate the water flowing through the pipes. This is a very iterative process where multiple simulations are necessary to dial in the right look and feel of the water.
The film reels, and the film moving across the rollers were all rigged so that they wiggle slightly, as if the machinery is a bit worn and unprecise. The speed of the film is timed so that you get a sense of the film strip moving, but it is times to that if you look closely you can also see the spinning TIFF logo on the film itself.
The eye is rigged so that the pupil can be contracted and expanded.
Rendering
After animation, all surface materials are tweaked, lit and rendered.
Compositing
Compositing of renderpasses. All light sources were rendered as separate elements, and the transition from the lit to the dark scene was done in compositing.
