"ROJAK"

Many countries have only one official language while some may have a couple. But only in Malaysia, we will find four different mother tongue language in one, all jostling for attention under a single linguistic umbrella. “Rojak Language” is the lingua franca of urban youth in the diverse cultural melting pot of Malaysia.

But this uniquely Malaysian approach, which helps to get people of many ethnic groups to
communicate with each other certainly does have its detractors. People would say language is the bed-rock of culture. Therefore, it is the Malay language that makes up much the bed-rock of “Rojak Language”.

I think, however, that Rojak Language also synonym to the one of the famous Malaysian delicacies called, Rojak Mamak that will not die out. It has found its niche in the hearts and minds of Malaysians where Malaysians are very fond of Mamak Rojak which comprises of mixture of cucumber (timun), white root potato (sengkuang) and ‘kuih’ that comes with peanut sweet sauce which is delicious and yummy.

To recapitulate, Malaysians of all persuasions and groups can learn to love and to love “Rojak Languages” for what it is as uniquely adaptable language that takes the best of all-comers and one that all Malaysians own. I strongly believe that this ‘rojak language’ can in fact hold us together as Malaysians. Four is better than one –“rojak languages”, is definitely a unique Malaysian Treasure!

There is no more true sign of one’s Malaysian-ness but one language to use in any situation is Rojak Language. Therefore, I was required to develop a unique looking comic book illustrations based on the chosen topic.
