The Bergens continue to travel in present-day to share their personal story of resilience and forgiveness after the traumatic event they experienced while serving as missionaries in Kenya. In 2008, the Canadian couple was brutally assaulted in their home and robbed soon after arriving to do missionary work with orphans.
Both of the Bergens were hospitalized with broken bones, and Eloise had to recover from sexual assault. Together, John and Eloise chose a path of healing and love rather than anger and fear. Crediting the power of forgiveness for their spiritual healing, the Bergens have written a book about their experience, called Forgiveness in the Face of Terror.
