Bergens’ Mission Continues Despite the Risks

Certified Retirement Financial Advisor Darcy Bergen serves as president of Bergen Financial Group, a firm that offers financial advice to seniors in managing their assets. Darcy Bergen is also involved in charitable works through the Bergen's Mission, a missions group founded by his parents, John and Eloise Bergen.

John and Eloise were missionaries in Kenya, working for the group Hope for the Nations. On the fateful day of July 9, 2008, the couple was attacked by eight machete-wielding locals. John, aged 70 at that time, suffered fractures to his skull, upper and lower limbs, and knees. Eloise, who was 65 at the time, was bound while a machete was held to her throat. Wounds to her face required 35 stitches. It was also reported that she was assaulted by the perpetrators.

Wanting to share the lessons they learned from their ordeal, John and Eloise wrote a book entitled “Forgiveness in the Face of Terror.” In the book, the Bergens described the “shock and the sufferings” they have experienced and how they found hope to forgive their attackers. The Bergens returned to Kenya after their wounds - physical, emotional, and spiritual - had healed to continue the mission they started there.
