Nectarine Blaze | Magdalena Munro | 2018

Bucking flames
stave into the

prismatic
kaleidoscope
of my night.

They barrel
through the
lopsided no
trespassing
sign with
disregard.

A shaggy girl
weaves her way
down a fabled
burning lane

she shakes
mightily

Fine particles
of soil and skin
weave inward
and upward as
a fire cyclone
stretches her
gummy limbs.

She reaches in to
unearth a good
hearted howl and
pushes her way
through the burn.

lonesome strides
make pacts with the
smoldering pavement

Nectarine blazes
sizzle like chunks of
butter tossed onto
hot iron waiting for
the morning batter

Where are the
birds?

In a prized
distance, a
swath of
untouched
land.

Circles

A labyrinth
drizzled with
stone spirals
weaves across
a matted parcel
of dusty land.

The fire is
shut down -

In the center
rests a sloping
cairn with holes
for which to slide
humming rocks
protecting rippling
nativity.

She finds
her way to
the center

and waits.
