2018ADF Commission dance work

Five talented female choreographers present an evening of glorious solo dance. Camille A. Brown returns to ADF with a section from her latest work ink. ink celebrates the rituals, gestural vocabulary, and traditions that remain ingrained within the lineage of the African Diaspora and reclaims African-Americans’ narratives by showcasing their authenticity. Ragamala’s  Aparna Ramaswamy (winner of a 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship), tap dancer and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, street jazz choreographer Rhapsody James, and contemporary Chinese choreographer Yabin Wang will each present ADF-commissioned solos.

In 2018, Yabin was invited by the American Dance Festival (ADF) to be an International Choreographer in Residence, during which time she premiered the dance Sepia, choreographed by Tatana Baganova. She was also commissioned to choreograph and dance a solo as part of ADF’s 85th anniversary celebration performance for five-part Wondrous Women program.
