Georgia Typographic Poster

This project was an assignment from the California Institute of the Arts course Introduction to Typography (via coursera.org)

The first step in this process was to research a typeface, then design an expressive typographic poster considering the connotations of the chosen typeface. What feelings, mood, time period, and ideas does it conjure up? If your typeface were a person, what kind of personality would it have?

Georgia was created by Matthew Carter in 1993 and released in 1996 as part of Microsoft's Core Fonts for the Web collection. As a typeface that was designed to be legible under many conditions, I'd Georgia's "personality" is easygoing and adaptable. Charming and friendly, it also maintains a sense of sophistication and elegance. Georgia has a classic, yet modern feel which is the look I was going for when designing this poster. I drew some visual inspiration from the look of early 1990s Microsoft.
