The American Quarter Horse is known for its endurance and agility. Below is an overview of the development of this popular and valuable breed.

American Quarter horses were first used by the American colonists of the 1600s and are descendants of English, Arabian, and Spanish horses. The name of the breed resulted from their excellent performance in quarter-mile races held by colonists in Rhode Island and Virginia.

Favored by early settlers, the American Quarter horse also played an important role in expanding the American frontier to the West. American Quarter horses were used by pioneers and cowboys and for farming, as well as for transportation over difficult terrain.

In 1940, the American Quarter Horse Registry was established. Presently, 11 Quarter Horse bloodlines are recognized as being the ancestors of the world’s entire Quarter Horse population.
