Knights Plaza @ UCF

IDENTITY
Challenge
The plaza itself is strategically located within the UCF campus, built to give students a place to be social, find a place to study and eat. The client wanted to keep the identity separate from the UCF brand without it being too far off that students won’t see a correlation to the school. While at the same time convey the identity or purpose of Knights Plaza.

Results
After numerous initial insights, and direction from UCF staff, I was able to come up with a design that conveyed a dual and meaningful symbol that was complementary to the university’s identity and at the same time reveal that the Knights Plaza is an architectural space built for the students.

Initial Identity Concepts
It started with the simple notion that the lines represented intersecting roads on a map that illustrated the Knights Plaza's territory within the campus grounds. One of UCF's many brands utilizes a "Knight", therefore a shield was used as the outgoing outline of the symbol. The letter "K", on the shield of course is there for the brand's namesake.

"The real challenge in creating something simple,
aside from the many different viewpoints of spectators
and the like...is maintaining & fighting for SIMPLICITY."

New Identity Direction
After an unsatisfying initial attempt and a deadlock from the client. I created more concepts that were different. I started looking into a Knight's helmet. That gave me an idea to render something that looked architectural. The attempt rendered something that can illusively be seen as either a helmet or a building structure. The fonts used was chosen for its "Modern" and 'Traditional" styling. Colors were taken from UCF's main brand.

Mockup Insights
It was truly gratifying to produce a website design that tailors to the collegiate audience. Something about the "college vide" resonates with the notion that life is always exciting and care free. Although, this prototype has garnered various renditions, the original concept (above) laid the foundation for an online experience that shows tons of information without being overwhelming.
