Asche & Spencer create music for media and film as well as maintain a massive library of original music that can be licensed. Since the early 00’s they’ve been know for their Box Sets—beautifully designed sets of CDs that document their stock music offerings. It was not uncommon for account executives at Asche & Spencer’s to see these collections on book shelves in the offices of creative directors years after they were released.

 

We were designing the newest Box Set when we proposed releasing a 7” of new material as a “trailer” for the Box Set Vol. 3. This was right before the vinyl boom so we honestly didn’t think most of them would get played. We actually pitched it as a really expensive (and memorable) postcard that would cut through the clutter of promo mailings.

 

On the other hand we knew that when people did listen to the record they’d love it.

We had Asche & Spencer create a 5-minute mix of new material and pressed a 1-sided 7” (to cut our costs by a third) and housed it in a screenprinted sleeve (white ink on black paper). Each sleeve was hand-numbered and went to a friend of the company.
