Self Portrait in the Cool World

This panoramic was over fourteen months in the making. Granted I probably would have gotten it done faster but real life gets in the way at times. I used a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator; often I would do the line work in illustrator and color it in photoshop so I would have the freedom for the gritty textures I was after. The piece was heavily inspired by Ralph Bakshi's work, including the 1992 Cool World, as well as a great many cartoons not limited to Dumbo, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Mighty Mouse. The moon of course was inspired by the moon in Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, but I think there are enough creative twists to make it mine. A lot of the color palette came from Cool World's concept art by Barry E. Jackson and the Beetlejuice cartoon from the very early 90s.

This will obviously look better as a print, due to the wide frame, but it's worth zooming in at parts.

This piece did not start out this big, but it grew as time went on. I'm very proud of it and relieved to have it finished. I have never taken on such an ambitious digital project before, and I think I rose to the challenge well. I hope you enjoy it.
