In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Connecticut Health Center, parents are allowed access to baby monitor cameras, called “Angel Eyes”, so that they can check in on their premature babies throughout the day. Family members are given peace of mind when reassured that their babies are safe in the unit. 

However, when a baby is taking a bath, or visiting a family member, their absence from the camera can cause great distress to those checking in. These “Angel Eyes” cards are designed to rest on the baby’s bed, in view of the baby’s camera, to update family members about the baby’s whereabouts. 

I designed these cards to be family friendly, comforting, and legible. I illustrated animals which correspond with the messages my client wanted to communicate, and chose calming colors with high contrast that translate well to black and white picture.

These cards have given peace of mind to the families of premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The cards increased the communication provided between nurses and families through a preexisting system- so that the nurses can spend more time caring for the babies and the families have increased trust in their hospital and care providers as a whole.
