Ear Buddies
The Desk Project was created by a group of university students. Our aim was to create packaging for products which would appeal to students, and in particular, art students. The products included a drawing tablet, tissue box, earphones and a box of pencils.
The package design for The Desk Project’s ear buddies was designed based on how to
best present the product to potential customers as well as the practicalities such as size and functionality. The size of the box is just big enough to hold the earphones comfortably. This means that the package and the structure on the inside can be created using the same A4 sheet of cardboard, minimising wastage. The owner can use the box as a storage container for the earphones, however the materials it is made from also means that the package can be recycled when no longer required.

The simple box shape was chosen for the space it provides for necessary information to be displayed as well as to fit in with other product packages in the group’s brand. The front of the box includes a window to view the product as a means for the customer to see exactly what it is they are buying. There is an inside structure in place to hide the cables so they can’t be seen through the window and to present the product neatly when the package is opened. The sides of the box fold over the tabs used for assembly to create a clean interior while also strengthening these sections. Lastly, a clear hanger has been added to the top of the package so the product can be hung practically in store shelves.
The visual design of the package was creating using the guidelines established for the group’s brand. A simple design was created using the assigned colour of light blue, the product’s unique pattern and the group’s name on the front and back of the package. Also included is a brief list of the features and essential pieces of information and a QR code for easy access to the website. These elements combine to create an artistic and youthful package, created to appeal to an audience of a similar nature.
