HIROSHIMA CASTLE
Hiroshima. Japan

Hiroshima Castle also known as Carp Castle was built in 1589 by Lord Mori Terumoyo. Unlike other castles in Japan, Hiroshima Castle was built in the center of the city as opposed to a hilltop or mountain top. Also inside the castle grounds is the Gokoku Shrine. During WWII the castle became a military base for the Japanese Military, Ninomaru (the second circle of defense). Hiroshima Castle was destroyed on August 6, 1945 by the Atomic Bomb, it was approximately 910m from the hypocenter. The castle it self was rebuilt 13 years later, the ruins of the military buildings remain in the castle grounds. The few trees that survived the Atomic bombing are all labeled with"A-bomb Surviver" plaques.
