Assignment:
Design a personal logo that is a visual reflection of you as a person, expresses the characteristics of your personality, and visually describes your design aesthetic. Using this logo, develop two single-sided business cards exploring the application of this logo.

I created this personal logo for a computer graphics course during undergraduate study. The assignment required expression of both my personality and my design aesthetic, so I approached the logo only after much reflection on both. I wanted the logo to convey three characteristics present in each of these: appreciative, adaptive, and adventurous. The typeface is Helvetica Neue Medium Extended, a choice I made with all three characteristics in mind. It's a well-considered update to the most revolutionary, versatile, and ambivalence-inducing typeface in the history of modern graphic design. I wanted to play with the typically neutral typeface by slightly rotating the 'a,' thereby expressing my more adventurous side. Initial sketches and experiments revealed an visually-interesting relationship in the negative space created by cropping the type, and I finally came to the final logo after exploring many different color options and deciding that the black and white suited my current design aesthetic well.
