Canal Street Typeface

The design intent and inspiration for my typeface draws from Amsterdam architecture. I was inspired to design a mono slab san serif that reflects Amsterdam and the architectural shapes of the buildings. I named my typeface Canal Street to mirror the letters in my font, which were based on the canal houses in the inner city of Amsterdam. I feel this is a unique name that will make my typeface stand out.

Throughout my design process I have done many sketches to further my development. I used the background of the canal houses as a guide to discover and create letter forms fitting to the unique shapes and bends of the architecture.

Canal Street communicates my design intent through the use of curves and bends, especially in the A and V. There are ridges on top of each letter to create a roof top feel. The letters are thick and bold though in close proximity to each other to imitate the buildings structures. The typeface is bold, fun and strange expressing the feel of being in Amsterdam.
