Yürüyen Türk - road to Sillyon
Regional strategy for the ancient city of Sillyon in Antalya - Turkey
To develop a strategy for the Archeological site of Sillyon, located 25 km North of Antalya. The strategy should include ideas for the site itself, the regional development and local economy. The final outcome would deliver a balanced proposal for 2025.
The hill of Sillyon went through a long and intricate history. The city was first mentioned in 500 B.C. Alexander the Great did not try to conquer it, due to the high defensive system. Layers of civilizations are still visible on these vast plateau. The archeological value is enormous, however the place is hard to access and devoid of proper planning. The surrounding area is a mix of small villages and agricultural lands. Sillyon could become a key factor for the micro economy of the area.
Our team (Anna Läser, Kanako Tada and I), develop a strategy based on the Nomads, which still wander around the region. The Yürüks, walk around with cattle and tents. The strategy presents a series of hiking trails leading to Sillyon, where a targeted group of tourist will experience the nomad culture, and walk their way to Sillyon. Along the trail natural attractions and overnight locations (in Tents or Huts) are available.
The local strategy includes some specific location. These fifteen locations, have been evaluated on site, according to criteria such as ground condition, view, intimacy and historical value. These conditions will host the overnight experience, in tents and huts. Location 5 and 8 have been selected to host a “plug-in” design hut. The hut is designed to fit the existing ruins, and will be the only foreign design element of the otherwise low impact strategy.
