What’s on the inside
My piece ‘What’s on the inside’ is derived from my journey of self-discovery; it explores the inner and outer worlds and how they can often be very different. There are many different factors that can mold and shape a person's world; for example, a person's ethnic background, the country they grew up in and their physical appearance other important factors are their financial situation, their mental health, their religious and family environment and family expectations. One factor that can mold a person is the way they are treated by others. If someone is not nurtured in the right it might result the need for them to guard their inner world as they fear exposure, vulnerability and judgement. These negative feels may build up and in order to deal with these feelings, someone might cover things up, hide things way, silence what we don’t like and lie to themselves because if they see what is going on others might too.
A teacup and saucer are normally a part of a tea set which often invites warmth, connection, gathering, conversation, openness and sense of belonging. In my piece, the tea set is on its own, broken and oozing everywhere, exposing the vulnerable inner and outer world at the same time. You can see the cracks and flaws in all their glory, no longer able to hide. The work is dealing with unresolved issues which we have locked up inside throughout our lives. We often want people to perceive us as strong and “all together” but inside we may feel flat, broken, fragile and confused.
