Trapped on the Inside
The piece ‘Trapped on the Inside’ is a piece which explores my personal inner journey regarding my lifelong battle with depression. As a young artist, I have always felt that I could only produce work when I felt happy, connected and balanced with myself but this unfortunately, was not always my reality which means I spend a lot of time feeling like I can’t produce work due to my depression. This year I have chosen to explore my depression through my work. In doing this I am trying to get an understand of my depression and explore the feelings that come with it e.g. numbness, lifelessness, vulnerability and dissociation.

Through my piece, I am working on developing my ability to express my darker side while working on a larger scale. I am also looking at developing the ability to communicate these emotions through the use of conflicting materials. Making this work has helped create a space in life for me to be able to discover and explore what is going on inside me; this has been an essential part of my growth and healing process. In this respect, my work is very different from other artists as it is about my own personal journey and experience, seen through my own lense and no one in this world has the ability to feel and experience the way I do. By having this deep, individually unique and comprehensive understanding of these themes gives me a definite point of difference from other artists.

I also want to invoke discussion around thoughts and feelings as I feel that it is very important for humans to share these things. I want the audience to have a personal connection with the work and the space to be able to explore their own darkness. I also want to raise awareness about depression, opening up the lines of communication outside of the confined walls of the medical clinics.
