On Playing: Emotionally Durable Lamps
Our lamps’ collective characteristic is to create novel and interesting experiences for the user. That our lamps can be
modified into an infinite number of ways means that it allows for unique self-expression, adapting over time as
the user also adapts and changes. Memory and narrative are concepts that we also tackle. Memory is an important factor of what makes a product emotionally durable. Above all, we love objects because of the memories they evoke. People say that products that remind them of their childhood are products they don’t give up easily. So by introducing play into our lamps, we are evoking a favourite part of people’s lives: their childhood.
Compono is an interactive lamp I designed that can change form. Composed of wooden and plastic pieces shaped like a ‘u,’ they are placed around an illuminating lamp box. They can shift forms, based on the user’s desires, as if they are being composed.
